Central Texas Woodturners Association announces gallery opening at Austin Bergstrom International Airport

AUSTIN, TEXAS FEBRUARY 8, 2012 – Central Texas Woodturners Association opens their first exhibition of lathe-turned wood art in the Austin Bergstrom International Airport.  This exhibit features over twenty works from local award winning artists in a wide range of styles.  The items include a segmented football by Johnny Tolly, vases by Craig Timmerman, inlaid platters by Steven Green, and spindle turned lace bobbins by Judy Williams. The exhibition runs from February through April.

The club works with local land owners and city forestry departments to reclaim some of the trees that would otherwise be burned or mulched. Curtis Turner, club president, stated:  “Most turners find great satisfaction in working with this locally sourced material to give it a second life.” Turner also said, “Occasionally, club members are commissioned to create objects from a tree that held sentimental value to a land owner but unfortunately, needed to be removed.”

The exhibit includes pieces that used locally harvested material.  The displays are located inside the secured area of Austin Bergstrom International Airport terminal.

Central Texas Woodturners Association is a non-profit club dedicated to providing education, activities, mutual friendship and support to those interested in woodturning in the greater Austin, Texas area.  Central Texas Woodturners Association is a member of the American Association of Woodturners.  More information can be found at www.ctwa.org.
